We are staying in the town of Rethymno for the conference, as this is where the university is as well. In it's small "old town," the central square features a gigantic lyra -- a musical stringed instrument.
As always, thank you so much for continuing to visit my albums. I appreciated your kind comments on the Ancient Agora market.
I bet you have a hundred images from this square! This is a very interesting take on the giant lyra - sets it well in context. By the way, what is a "town square" called over there? In Italy I know it is called a piazza and in Germany a platz.
@ericdibosco Thanks Eric! It actually isn't that interesting of a spot. Junko and I went to photograph and between the neon signs surrounding things, the weird appointments (the lyra was fascinating, but then there is an odd stagecoach too, and a marble statue -- a very unusual combination). Photography since arriving in Crete hasn't been so successful, as we are with the group of speakers, and their focus is not going out in optimal lighting! The square is called a plateia here -- a new word for me as well.
Wow, you certainly got the dimensions of that lyra against the facades of the town.....that must be quite a thing to behold in the middle of the square.
Very interesting sculpture!
