I braved the balcony again to take images for a pano where I tried (without a tripod -- lesson 1 -- never do this without a tripod) to capture the images to create a wide scene that I would match up by hand. I also thought it made sense to bracket each one (lesson 2 -- hand held bracketing for a pano virtually guarantees the lighting will be wrong). I overlapped a lot so that I could match up the edges (lesson 3 -- even if you overlap, you have to get the exact right same POV or it won't align vertically).
So, final lesson learned -- watch some tutorials on making a pano in PS and let the software do the work of alignment. THEN, deal with tweaks using LR sliders. Or, just use my iPhone's pano app!
So funny Taffy as I have done all three! Like you complete failure and a painful lesson learned! The IPhone pano is so good too! I keep forgetting what a great tool I have in my pocket! A wonderful view and a great idea! Shame about the joins!
It has a sort of time lapse feel. There's also a pano option in the latest Lightroom upgrade (if I remember correctly). I haven't tried it myself. I have only ever tried pano once using my camera and wasn't very happy with the result. My phone camera does a fairy decent job.
It's so unusual and quite eye catching. Fantastic clouds and I rather like the changing light. I did think it was a time of day pano. I raced out of the house tonight and took off with the 4-wheeler to catch some wonderful towering thunderheads that were pink with the setting sun. I happily snapped away, and thought I'd try a different lens, only to finally look at the screen and discover it's message that there was no card in the camera. The light had faded by the time I got home. A learning experience with nothing to show for it.
Great advice on all not to attempt in order to get a seamless pano, but tell me again why you tried this without your tripod?! BTW, I got the same Manfrotto tripod you have, the 190, and I am loving it!! Thanks for all your advice! And, on this pano, frankly, I would have given up on the joints and done a Hockney like collage, and let the chips fall wherever they may! ;-)))
I tried one pano from a tower in the 1000 islands area and didn't have a tripod. I only did three pictures and used the software and it was ugly. But still this will make a nice remembrance of temporary home.
The pano is amazing as is the cityscape. Unfortunately, and this happens to me many times, the lighting changes with the angle and the line where the stitch takes place shows.
Since I still carry around a little point and shoot, your info was quite interesting (I don't know if I will ever try it, but it's a great lesson should I ever need it!)
@bob65 I'll send you a link when I do try to combine in PS. I don't know how to use it at all, so I first have to find the time to learn how to do it! AND then see if I can do one worth posting...
This is on my "to do" list, as a skill to learn. Good for you, to give it a try. I find the entire thing intimidating, but baby steps. What a great view you have!
@rosiekerr Thanks...definitely was above my current skill set and would have done better with a small frame, but I learned why it's good to have software that can do this. I do love the view...will miss it a lot!
You have got a wonderful sense of humor and write so well and precise. I love your photo though it is a bit off. I kind of like it this way though. You have certainly learned a lot about lightroom and all that you are doing to create great photos. I am so behind. FAV
Beautiful view Taffy, I'm sure you're going to miss it!
I used my cell phone to do a pano of the Icefields on my Alberta holiday and I was quite surprised how nice and clear it was!
Tripod is a must for these kind of shots...............love the clouds!!!
It is amazing how much time goes by experimenting on different techniques!
