For those old enough, we may remember the ground breaking serial drama/comedy, Hill Street Blues. It was one of the first ensemble drama weekly shows, airing in the U.S. between 1981-1987. It took place in an unnamed fictitious east coast city but the exterior was filmed in Chicago and this was the exterior of the police station. It has a long and checkered history since the late 1800s -- http://www.hillstreetblues.net/precinct/precinct.html for those interested -- and now serves as the police station for our university police. We were at a college picnic today that was held in the ball park a few blocks away.
Many, many thanks for your response to my train station shot. Greatly appreciated!!
OMG, I SO remember Hill Street Blues. I loved it. I still often use the phrase, in fun, 'let's be careful out there ...'!! Ah, Frank and his crazy wife. Oh, I digress ... this is a lovely shot.
Sorry, did not grow up in this country, and consider myself fortunate to not have had TV during those formative years! ;-))) Cool building, though, and very nice shot!
Excuse me but there is 7th District inscribed on top of the doorway while on the door it says 21st District - there must have been a great change during all this time. the building has beautiful architecture and there are so interesting reflections in the windows. Very nice capture.
@sangwann Thanks for the visit -- very observant! I'll be it was the 7th district until the city kept growing, and that the doors are newer than the arch. Just a guess of course!
Love the building and B&W. I was just looking at it when I noticed how clean and shiny the windows on the right were so I chanced over to the left side a what is that crinkled up foil to keep the aliens away? Oh no there is an alien in the other window. Guess the tin coin isn't working!
Do I remember it? My wife and I were addicted to it! We couldn't wait for it to be on each week. Fantastic writers and actors! I guess I had it in my mind that it took place in NYC. Interesting to learn that it was the Windy City! FAV for nostalgia!
@skipt07 I agree -- they definitely conveyed an 'eastern' vibe to the show. I couldn't believe when someone pointed this out to me when we moved back here in 2001. I had no idea filming of any kind took place here, much less on or so near our campus!
Love the architecture and the story. Fav. I definitely watched this program in the eighties.
In India we have a lot of old buildings made in the British Raj which have such features. They fascinated an architect friend visiting from the US.
