Right now snow is falling heavily and we are watching it closely hoping we'll still be able to fly off tomorrow morning. But this afternoon, it was absolutely a glorious fall day. Beautiful fluffy clouds, golden sunlight, ice on the lake creating little jewels at the base of the reeds. Keeping fingers crossed that the snow over night just means a pretty drive back to Chicago.
Update: Here's what it looks like now -- and we have to get up a steep bluff road in the morning to get out of here and to the airport -- eek! It had stopped and now it's started again -- lake effect snow which is unpredictable. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207199556361253&set=a.1258479856126.2040839.1053522597&type=3&theater
Magical! When I view this on black, I feel as though I'm in a canoe on the water looking out at the vast scene before me. Love your fantastic pov! Good luck with your travels.
That is absolutely gorgeous! I can't believe you're having snow there!!! Here, the winds are howling tonight and it was preceded by a rainy day... I wonder if it will be our turn soon!
This looks so beautiful and its hard to think there was snow within hours! Having just read how treacherous the journey can be I am hoping that you have a safe trip home and that you will soon be on the cosy warmth of your home!
Amazing to see the snow right here at lake level! You will be alright - the road would still be warm and the snow will have melted! You will be sad to leave but it is part of your year, isn't it!
Hi Taffy - could I ask for some advice on a fisheye lens? I think you bought one in the end didn't you? What did you buy and what was the one you borrowed. I'd quite like one but I don't want to spend too much money as I'm not sure how much I'd use it. Do you have any recommendations about what to get or what to avoid?
@rachelwithey Rachel, I totally agree that the lens is fun but not worth a major investment as it's an occasional lens at best. I have been borrowing and like the Nikon one that was made for a crop sensor lens. It means I have to convert my camera (a menu setting) to DX from FX, but it's fast and easy. That one is auto-focus and more expensive than the one I bought. I thought I'd need to give it back, so bought an 8mm Rokinon which gives me a full circle shot when I take the lens hood off. With the lens hood on, I convert my camera to DX as I do with the other one (which is a 10mm) and it works the same, except manual focus. That was not expensive -- I waited for a sale and it was around $200, or maybe around $150 -- can't remember. But at this point, since I still have both, I am mostly using the borrowed one. I feel like I'm taking the same shot when I use it so I only take it with me when I'm thinking I'll be in an interesting architectural spot with good arches and lines. It's not the sort of lens that I find fun to use in a variety of settings. Bottom line, from my experience, I wouldn't spend more than I had to for a fun, play around lens.
I've been toying with the idea of a fisheye for ages, but keep baulking at the price for something I don't think I'd use very often. Your comments to @rachelwithey have just made up my mind. Thank you very much. BTW, love the shot, looks very cold.
It's really pretty- but it does have that crisp blue, cold look to it! I couldn't view your link for some reason, but hope that you'll be able to travel as planned. As always Beaver Island is beautiful!
@taffy thanks Taffy that's really helpful and pretty much backs up what I was thinking. I'll have a look around. I don't have a wide angle lens and possibly that would be a more sensible buy but I think there are occasions when I'd really enjoy the distortion of the fish eye. I loved the photos you took with it.
