The Three Amigos by taffy

The Three Amigos

Taken at our picnic site in Ngorogoro Crater. It's a fresh water lake which apparently has a different kind of drainage than other hippo pools (characterized by a horrible odor), which is what our guide said led to no smell. The hippos were fun to watch as they popped up from under the water in various combinations. I liked this one as the three came up sort of in unison and seemed to be quite interested in the photographers and viewers along the bank. I was glad to know they are vegetarian, though considered the most dangerous of animals if you get too close.
A dangerous vegetarian...I wonder what PETA make of that? Excellent shot though as always

Wonderful POV. Love that you were able to capture three of them. Interesting about the water--I've only seen hippos in zoos and the water always looked pretty nasty, but this is clear enough to show reflections. Fav.

Really like how this is at eye level and all those eyes are engaging with the viewer. Top shot. It seems to m that you had an excellent guide which must have been really helpful. (Our guide in Namibia was really poor, about which we have had to complain).

@helenhall Thanks for the view and kind comment. That is such a shame about your guide! It makes a HUGE difference I'm sure. He really knew animal behavior and he also knew the parks so well that he knew where to go. He was in constant communication with other guides (we joked with him that he seemed to know everyone) so he'd suddenly race us off where he had heard there were cheetah, or lions, or something else unusual (a lion kill one early morning when he'd taken me out for a photo-focused drive that Jim skipped). It really made the trip for us. I'm so impressed with the company we used as both the lodging and the guides were perfectly chosen for us. Another couple -- travel agents -- also used the same company and loved them. Their trip included travel with 2 sons about 12 and 14. They had a similar itinerary but it was interesting how they had slight changes to make it work for the boys. They knew what they were doing for customizing, it was clear.

A cool image

I have a poor quality shot of hippos in this position. I named it "All you ever see of Hippos". For me at the time that was true!
