A new tradition was started in our college after I retired. Following the successful defense of a dissertation which means a newly minted Ph.D., a member of the committee rings a very loud bell to announce it in the college. The chair of the students' committee is given a tiny bell to commemorate that role. Here's my bell, and in my extras you can see my student holding the bell that was rung standing next to me, with three of her four committee members -- all smiles: https://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2020-01-14
I had two students yet to finish despite my retiring. With Amy's successful defense yesterday, I have only one left.
Congratulations to Amy and you on guiding her through to the successful defense. Your bell gives a great shine on the black and I like all the space you have given it.
What a wonderful tradition! What a great teacher you are Taffy to still be encouraging and helping your students after your retirement. I think they were lucky to have you! Love the image!
Fabulous tradition and such a beautiful capture of this bell. If the college ever require a PR document or brochure, they need to use this photo. It's just super. Has to be viewed on black!
That's a huge accomplishment and a nice tradition. Your bell looks great on black and this composition truly makes it stand out. Excellent shot and congratulations!!
What a lovely tradition, and what a beautifully photographed commemorative bell. I don't remember Bill having a bell (rather two) for the twins so it must have been after them.
@angelar Thank you! I'm not sure how the US system compares to yours, so am not sure what the equivalent of lecturer would be. But I think similar -- I was a professor for 38 years until I retired, so responsible for research and teaching. I did love my job/career! It is a relief to be almost finished, post-retirement, with only one more Ph.D. candidate to graduate. Where are you teaching? Is A level equivalent to university? I think it is but am not sure.
