High Waters by taffy

High Waters

The Great Lakes water levels are record high this summer, causing a wake of destruction along the shorelines. Beaver Island has been hit particularly hard on the east and south coasts. This is at the end of Little Sand Bay trail -- what used to be a wide beach for picnics and playing in the sand.
An article on the water situation for those interested: https://www.petoskeynews.com/featured-pnr/ebb-and-flow-high-waters-and-erosion-in-northern-michigan/article_aebe3bbd-1d38-5ffb-8b3d-f240851cf97a.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=user-share
Nice b&w of the lake and shoreline...and not long ago the concern was the lakes were too low...

This works really well in black and white because of the high water- very dramatic! I guess we humans build and think Mother Nature is just going to follow our lead but we assume too much! Good shot!
September 11th, 2020
Oh no one more thing to worry about! Is your home safe? Do they know what is causing this? Sad to see this beach disappearing!
September 11th, 2020
Goodness me, mother nature is always surprising us isn't she. Stay safe
September 11th, 2020
fabulous textures in B&W
September 11th, 2020
@pamknowler We're fine. We're on the west side so while our beach is disappearing, we are on higher ground so the house and surrounds are likely to be okay. My heart goes out to those whose homes have really been affected. And the road at the south end has washed out!
September 11th, 2020
@amyk No kidding -- and only a few years ago too!
September 11th, 2020
Cool capture. The b&w does very well for this shot.

Do the lakes have tides?? Have the seasonal rains changed to feed the lakes?? This is a still lovely landscape
September 11th, 2020
@30pics4jackiesdiamond No, no lake tides at all. The rise is due to more rain, less evaporation, and other factors that I am sure I don't know! But basically the lake levels vary historically, and we are now at record highs after several years of record lows. It's crazy wild.
September 11th, 2020
Oh my gosh, good to hear you're OK. Sad about the beach though, I hadn't even considered those lakes having such varying levels. Makes perfect sense, of course. Sorry to hear others have been adversely affected.
September 11th, 2020
I totally forgot to say how much I liked the image, it captures the essence of what you're experiencing very well.
September 11th, 2020
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I just added a link to an article about the water levels. I thought it was pretty informative.
September 11th, 2020
@golftragic @pamknowler I just put in the link to an article about the water levels.
September 11th, 2020
Wow! That's high water. Hope it will recede soon.
September 11th, 2020
Very interesting article, Taffy. I didn't have any idea about the vast fluctuations of the water levels of the Great Lakes - or how much rain you had received this year. What an impact that has made all over your area from the homes to the wildlife. Your picture is terrific in b&w - really fits the dramatics of the situation.
September 11th, 2020
Thanks for the link Taffy, very interesting and informative. We have plenty of sea-front places with these kinds of issues due to rising sea levels and adverse weather, but I was totally ignorant about the Great Lakes. Mother Nature is a law unto herself wherever you live.
September 11th, 2020
Nice in B&W. Interesting article, too. I did not know the Great Lakes area had problems with erosion and high water levels. Sad to see the damage to homes and wildlife.
September 11th, 2020
@taffy sadly the article is not available to the UK. I know they are very worried about sea levels rising due to climate change and the melting of the arctic ice cap but didn’t realise there were issues with the Great Lakes.
September 11th, 2020
So sad to see this-
September 11th, 2020
Relieved to hear that you are okay, climate change seems to take different 'faces', stay safe
September 11th, 2020
Great b&w
September 11th, 2020
Beautiful capture and great in b/w. I hope you have more beaches that are still existing.
September 11th, 2020
Looks good in black and white. Our coastline has suffered badly from erosion too
September 11th, 2020
great capture!
September 11th, 2020
Glad you're OK Taffy but so sad for the people who are loosing land and homes. Couldn't read your article as it's temporarily unavailable in the UK. I guess it's global warming that's behind it.
September 11th, 2020
Great b&w capture.
September 11th, 2020
Gosh , what devastation ! a great capture
September 11th, 2020
I wasn't able to read the article, but the photo says it all. :-(
September 11th, 2020
Yikes! What a year. Makes for a nice b/w capture, though!
September 11th, 2020
Love the b&w capture.
September 11th, 2020
There are so many issues with the climate, I hope it's not too late to sort them out.
September 11th, 2020
Our coast suffers like this every time there is a storm
September 11th, 2020
This sounds very serious, especially since there’s no end in sight. Water is so powerful. Nothing survives that stands in it’s way. This is a great storytelling image!
September 11th, 2020
I do like this, fav
September 11th, 2020
@pamknowler I’ll send it via email.
September 11th, 2020
Nice fence line... love the B&W.
September 11th, 2020
Great B&W shot and I like your pov.
September 11th, 2020
Lovely b&w image Taffy. Mother Nature is certainly throwing a lot your way.
September 11th, 2020
Incredibly beautiful in B&W! fav
September 11th, 2020
Wow! Cool fence, but sad to hear about the rising water taking the beaches.
September 11th, 2020
A lovely scene and composition. Fav!! 😀
September 11th, 2020
Kas
Beautiful layers and textures.
September 11th, 2020
Seems Mother Nature is upset about something. Nice view of the water and dunes. Too bad the lake has exceeded its bounds.
September 11th, 2020
Nice B&W
September 11th, 2020
Wonderful leading line and composition
September 11th, 2020
Wonderful shot
September 11th, 2020
Great wide angle photo - one can see the water encroaching and knocking down the fence.
September 12th, 2020
Wonderful b and w rendition, storytelling, composition
September 12th, 2020
@pamknowler I thought I might be able to save it as a pdf to send to you Pam, but Save As is greyed out. Sorry.
September 12th, 2020
Cool capture ... I like it in black and white
September 13th, 2020
So sad to read your tale of the rising water levels. Love the capture though.
