@joansmor Yes Joan, this is the shot that I had envisaged the night we arrived but all this was in darkness,,, my Mum always said: "Everything comes to he who waits."!
@frankhymus This was taken yesterday with the D5100 h/h - I retook the shot tonight with the D610 on a tripod and at ISO 100, f/16 with starbursts and everything... I liked this one better (at least viewed on the iPad) - go figure!
@vignouse Never, ever a question about trust for you are trusted.
I knew it was an ipad upload, but when I see a good photo I always
check the Exif to learn from the photo.
Beautiful! I love the color of the wooden boats in the lighting. Feels very serene. I spent a lot of time in marinas as a child and, even though this was taken at night, it feels like an early morning adventure. Lovely!
Stunning capture Richard. It looks so quiet and peaceful. Thanks for the information on your camera settings. I might just go out tonight and see what I can find!
One of your best. I love how the left of the image is in no way affected by the sodium glow of the lights on the right. I know nothing about these things but that looks to me like a very, very technical shot.
@vignousefollower Thanks Matt - much appreciated. It wasn't that difficult a shot: the left side is lit by a mercury vapour floodlight and the right side, as you say, by the sodium vapour street lights - I just had to choose which light source to set the colour balance for... I choose to make the left the most natural looking.
@frankhymus Frank, I've discovered why I didn't like the shots of this scene that I took with the D610: I have an Eye-Fi card in the second card slot which is set to record JPEG images, but I had forgotten that I had set the image size to small for faster transfer for checking purposes during a recent portrait shoot, so the images were being heavily compressed in camera!
Just read what you are up to, very brave, but I love that you are giving it a try, and with such good results. This is an excellent shot, even more so for hand held and 3200 ISO, on my Canon 7d I dare not go over ISO 400 for fear of the dreaded noise, for a while now I can't help but wonder if Nikon might be better then Canon!!!
@jo13 Thanks Jo - curiously I've been coveting a Canon SD Mk3 because, reportedly, their low-noise performance is exemplary... I should have changed when I went full-frame with Nikon, it's too late now.
I bought the now obsolete D5100 I used for this shot from Hong Kong for not much money because I wanted a Nikon with a fully rotatable rear screen, and I've been delighted with its performance: my post for 23 September of the toadstool was also taken at ISO 3200.

Great shot. FAV
