Mrs S and I are responsible this week for opening and closing Paimpont Abbey: when you are alone in an 800+ year old building, somehow it lends a certain clarity and perspective to your thoughts. I confess that my musings as I closed up this evening were of a mundane nature, as I was wondering what I might find rather late on a rainy day to post as my 365 entry for today that I had not already posted at least once before.
And then the thought came to me that often we don't see what's there because we 'know' what's there. This idea was still going round in my head as I left the building and instinctively looked up to see if more rain was likely.
What struck me was not what I saw, but rather what I didn't see. When I looked to the rooftops, I stopped seeing the 21st century: the parked cars, the Abbey's floodlights, the summer visitors, and saw the Paimpont of many yesterdays....
@shepherdmanswife This is actually a single image processed in Lightroom CC. I was just about to get into my car parked outside the Abbey when I looked up as I described... I simply reached into the car for a camera - there's always one there - and snapped what I saw.
@mcsiegle Thanks Mary - the building is listed and protected by Batiments de France so unsightly cables around the Abbey are prohibited... the zone of protection extends to a 400 meter radius.
