We are redoing the information guide for visitors to Paimpont Abbey. The current guide is available in eight languages but is only in B&W and looks rather dated now. I am busy at the moment capturing the images for the new leaflet, of which this is one.
The chancel is essentially baroque in style: the wood-panelling and the altar are from the 17th c., the stained glass windows (which depict St. Judicaël founding the abbey in 645AD) are from the 19th c. and the forged iron altar is 21st c. and is a link with the iron industry which thrived in Paimpont for three centuries. The vaulted roof is 15th c. The baldaquin (the canopy over the altar) is the only one in Brittany to have six pillars and it is surmounted with a Marial crown.
We've recently replaced the floodlighting in the chancel and it is now mostly low consumption Led units which are very efficient but the colour temperature is rather odd and clashes with that in the rest of the Abbey... and with the daylight. This rendering is the best I've been able to manage - it's an HDR blend of three images.
They are lucky to have your contributions for the guide... this is beautifully proportioned and composed. Delightful to see the inside, after some exterior views.
Every time I see a photo of the Abbey, exterior or interior I see it anew. I think it's the stillness that wows me. When I'm doing something there I don't always see and feel the peace and balm that this shot exudes for me.
An old monastery comes to the new age with LED lights. Is nothing sacred? ;-)
I love the colours, the detail of the stained glass, how you captured the light as well as the beautiful wood trim! FAV!
