One of my favourite autumn treats is eating chestnuts and, unlike most people, I prefer to eat them raw rather than roasted... especially when they are freshly gathered. I went for a walk in the top field this afternoon to visit the lone chestnut tree bordering the field - the rest are oaks - and was rewarded with a bumper crop of newly fallen fallen chestnuts which only needed to be gathered up. This image is of just a couple of square foot of field - multiply that by 50 or so to get some idea of my bounty!
And very nice they are too... simple pleasures are hard to beat.
Bounty indeed! The outer covering is definitely definite from the 'chestnuts' I found last weekend. Mine are the inedible buckeye/horse chestnut. Such a pretty color of mahogany brown they are.
@lyndemc Horse chestnuts are very pretty but They are toxic to humans and most animals although deer can eat them. Eating just one probably wouldn't kill you... but you would be pretty poorly. The sweet edible chestnut has a case covered with very prickly spines which play havoc with your hands - the horse chestnut outer shell is fleshy with fewer short, soft spikes.
Oh, I so hate you now, Richard.....I love, love eating chestnuts, and they are my absolute favorite sweet treat!! I prefer them roasted like I used to get them from the street vendors where I grew up, but I will also eat them boiled. Sometimes I will take a nibble of a raw one, and it actually tastes real good, but I never tried to eat them like a fruit. Then, again, I never had them freshly picked like you did here, so I am sure the taste is so superior. Seriously, this makes my mouth water!! You don't mind sending me a care package, do you?!! ;-))
