OCOLOY Day 77: Lamballe, Brittany

This afternoon was sunny and spring-like so I took a run-out on the motor-bike and ended up in the town of Lamballe. This is a view across the river Gouessant which runs through the centre of the town. The imposing church (one of two in the town) is the aptly named Notre Dame de Grande Puissance - 'Our Lady of Great Power'. (I like this view but would have dearly loved to have removed the power lines and the TV aerials - sooc is hard sometimes!)

Another to be viewed on black, if you can.

This image is SOOC and is part of my ongoing OCOLOY project - you can read more about it in my profile.
The black background does add a touch, but the image itself is very good. I like to take a run out myself and see what I can capture, and power lines and ariels are a distraction. I admire how you keep getting interesting shots and stories and all OCOLOY. The Fuji you are using is an interesting camera, it's film simulation feature sounds interesting..

Great reflection shot.. Every time I see your photos I think that I need to travel to this area. You represent it, show it - so very well..

Lovey little town.

Lovely composition...neat architectural details, light, reflections

@jporcaro @seattlite Thank you ladies... I really appreciate your encouragement. This project is rewarding but much more demanding than I imagined so all your kind words make it easier to keep on keeping on.

Lovely shot. I like how the reflections turn the arches into tunnels.

First let me say this is a beautiful shot, and that following your project inspires me daily to try and get it right in camera. That said let me also add that my eye went straight to the deep contrasts in the reflections of the arches of the bridge in the water, yes overall it would be more pleasing without the wires, but I did not initially find them a distraction! This also got me thinking about the fact that we see these wires and antennas as aesthetically unpleasing, but by removing them are we removing a piece of history? In generations to come wires and antennas will become obsolete. I did not think about this until I saw this image and read your comments!

Really like the reflections under the bridge and the architecture of the buildings.

When I first saw your photo my eye was drawn to the dark tunnelling and arches reflected in the water. I didn't notice the wiring and antennas until you had pointed out, they're just that suttle. The architectural textures of the church are stunning. Exceptional shot indeed, instant fav too.

I'm with Ukandie and Jules...I didn't 'see' the wires and aerials either. What I did see was a splendid church in a commanding position (great POV), tones, textures and TUNNELS. Said tunnels lend look as if they might be constructed from the same (local?) stone as the church.

What a wonderful place to roam around on your motorbike. Beautifully composed shot, as ever.
March 18th, 2016
I didn't notice the wires either. Because you have made the church and the bridge the centre of attention you overlook them altogether.

Wonderful shot Richard, you've captured a great dynamic range in this one, and I agree with you comment about the power lines and TV aerials. Fav.
Richard i'm Just wondering, do you take the images in B&W or do you convert them after? and how do rate the cameras low light capability.
March 18th, 2016
@gamelee Hi Lee - well normally I shoot only in Raw and convert either in LR or in Siver Efex Pro. For my OCOLOY project though, all images are SOOC so I shoot in JPEG using the in-camera B&W simulation and do nothing else at all to these images so what you get is what was recorded on the memory card, warts and all! As to low-light capability, I have no hesitation in shooting at ISO 3200 and in B&kW, ISO 6400 or even a bit higher is no problem at all.

Add me to the group. I didn't notice the wires until you mentioned them. I think we stop seeing something that is so common to us everyday. I have to really be careful they aren't in all my pictures.

Nice shot Richard. Love the perspective, the architecture, the bridge, and (need I add?) the monochrome image. A fav for me!

@vignouse Thank you for the reply, I'm considering purchasing the X100T as a carry everywhere/street/holiday camera, well you know sometimes one just gets a little tired of humping around an SLR and associated weight. I considered the XT1 but i'd be back to carrying again. Just waiting now until my alter ego gets fed up of the umming and ahing.
March 18th, 2016
@gamelee The XT1 with the 18-135mm lens keeps winking at me as a 'do-it-all' camera for trips and holidays but I know that I should really wait for the XT2 which should have all the bells and whistles that the new X-Pro2 has, especially the new sensor... and anyway, I need another camera like I need a hole in the head. Have you looked at the XT10? It's got the same sensor and software as the XT1 but it's really tiny - I have it with the XC16-50 lens... not as good as the XF series but more than adequate as a carry everywhere camera. I Bought it for trips out on the bike... when I'm not doing Ocoloy that is!
March 18th, 2016
I like the contrasts of deep shade and light, Richard.
March 18th, 2016
Spectacular shot Richard! Great choice for a b/w and composition! Fav!

@vignouse Thanks Richard, decisions decisions and expensive ones. I'll have a look at the XT10.
March 18th, 2016
An excellent choice for monochrome treatment.
March 18th, 2016
This looks a great place and this scene you have captured really well in b&w
March 18th, 2016
@gamelee With a prime lens it will cost you less than the XT1 body only and less than the X100T... even cheaper if you take the zoom option as I did as I already had four Fuji primes.
March 18th, 2016
I think you should learn to love antennae and power lines. ;-) I don't think I need say anything about your mastery of composition.
March 18th, 2016
Great shot Richard, yes you could edit those wires out, but the whole image is strong enough that you don't notice them.
Love Ukandiel's @ukandie1 thoughts and comments. Photography, in general used to be considered to record an instant in time, with all our editing software now a day's maybe sometimes we strive too hard to achieve what we think is the right moment in time.
This is a true record of a moment in time, nicely seen and captured.

@s4sayer @ukandie1 @juleshoogstraanderson
Nothing more to add, because Andie, Jules, and Margaret have already said it so well.
March 19th, 2016
Wonderful photo. I like the B&W which seems to highlight the different textures for me, tree, water and stonework. Katharine
March 19th, 2016
Great comp, Richard. Fav.

Really like this one Richard, great balance in the reflection
March 19th, 2016
I love the black circles formed by the water and the arcs.
