Our First Grade students finish their study of Native American cultures with a Pow-Wow. A pow-wow (also powwow or pow wow or pau wau) is a gathering of North America's Native people. The word derives from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning "spiritual leader". A modern pow-wow is a specific type of event where both Native American and non-Native American people meet to dance, sing, socialize, and honor American Indian culture. This culminating activity gives the students the opportunity to share what they have learned with other classes and their parents. They present the music, dances and commentary with respect and reverence. This is the first year my schedule allowed me to attend this program. I was impressed by the seriousness of the participants. Mrs. Hallett, the program director, would remind the boys and girls to walk with purpose and that kept them focused.
I have to say that I'm really impressed with the programs your school does and their approach to presenting material in a way that kids will enjoy and still learn from.
I think it is such a gret idea to expose our young people to the diversity of all cultures. We need to learn as much as we can about our fellow friends.
