I hope you are not tired of my school pictures, but so much of my time is spent at school, and there is always something new and interesting going on. Here, for example is the final competition for the 4th grade Geography Bee. Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. I thought the photo of the finalists would be of interest because of the staggering imbalance of the sexes. Of the eleven students who scored the highest on the pre-qualifying written exam, only one is a girl. This has generally been the case right up to the national competition. I wonder if they are better visual learners. The irony is that it is men who don't like to ask directions,
Our winner is shown with the Head of the Lower School.
Nice shot. That is the thing about 365 people get to share what is improtant to them. I have tosay I knew about spelling bees but this is the first time I have heard about a geography bee. That is so good to have
Congratulations to the winner! That's pretty interesting that the boys did better, but in some ways not surprising. Boys are a bit more concrete when it comes to places- where girls treat it more like fairly tale. If that makes any sense. I like seeing your school pictures. It looks like a fantastic school!
another great lesson and nice illustrative shots; i'm like men in having that trait and friends have often laughed at me as I pore over my map while they run into and ask for directions - I'd drive around all day before I did that
The winner does look pleased with himself! I really enjoy seeing school photos. I'm a teacher too and it is amazing to see the similarities and the differences between the various systems.
Great shots to capture the event. It is interesting about the gender imbalance. I read something today suggesting that maths abilities are similar between both genders, it is cultural expectations that determine actual performance - I wonder if something similar is at play in geography? The winner certainly looks proud of his achievement!
I like to mention that I like your school's curriculum and also the pictures you take of interesting subjects concerning your school and students. I haven't heard of a geography bee before but it sounds interesting.. also I like to congratulate the winner and the runner ups that is if they have runner ups.
