Commanding still

Fragment of the sarcophagus lid of Pharoah Ramses VI from the exhibition Pharoah at the NGV Melbourne. Pharoahs of the New Kingdom (1550-1069BCE) were buried in a series of stone sarcophagi and wooden coffins inside each other. This piece of Ramses VI's sarcophagus was found in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings along with some other pieces left behind in robberies recorded in ancient texts which had stripped the tomb of precious metals and other valuable items. The bodies of Ramses and other kings were later moved to another tomb for royal mummies at risk of looters.

Posting late today as I slept in after a night viewing of this exhibition organised for University of Melbourne alumni. Wonderful to have the opportunity to view the exhibition quietly without crowds.
