Attempt

I really liked the negative painting effect but had less of a grasp of it than I thought I did. I watched the tutorial but should have been following it as I painted I think. I am not quite sure where I went wrong and would really appreciate some advice on this one!

@grammyn
@grammyn Katy, i think you painted over areas that should have remained unpainted. That is, the hearts in the first layers. You need to paint only the areas around all hearts, including those from previous layers. (I am not sure if i make sense).
I mean: draw 2 hearts, paint the area outside them in a light value. Then draw 2 more hearts and paint the area outside all 4 in a darker value. And do not paint over the already avoided hearts.
I would suggest giving it another try with hearts of the same size and maybe one colour or two. Until you get the grasp of the effect of layering.
Do give it another try, as the effects are quite spectacular.
Now that i think of it, i should try it as well again.

@grammyn Katy what Monika has written makes sense. I'm not sure which tutorial you watched. I did find one that used leaves much easier to understand and follow than the one that used trees. Having done two negative effect paintings I would now like to try doing one with trees.

@grammyn what tutorial did you use. I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin. I really like the colours that you have used.

@salza @wakelys this is the tutorial that I watched but I have to confess I watched it several days before it actually started painting and thought I could remember. Apparently I forgot some of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iynw_WaVdQs Thank you for your kind words and your support!

@monikozi I think you are probably right. The fact that I watched a tutorial a few days before I actually started painting did not work in my favor. I am seriously considering trying again and this time using only one sized heart. I always look forward to your critiques because you are so knowledgeable and so helpful at the same time. Thank you so much.

@grammyn - i was lost on this technique, too. but i thought it was because i used the star shapes which doesn't do much when i put more shapes and more paint. i might give it another try just to get me back on track again and maybe use an easier shape. i like your heart shapes and the colours you used are quite lovely. it makes for a nice abstract and very pleasant to the eyes. aces!

@summerfield So very nice of you to be so supportive about this one. I really liked the overall effect and so may give it another go to see if I can improve the skill
