After a beautiful photo by @summerfieldhttps://365project.org/summerfield/365-still/2022-10-13
So much wrong with this one and less than desirable results for me. I learned first in oils which is painting from back to front, covering any mistakes with a new layer but that doesn't work with watercolors and I am still learning the progressions required. It could be worse though so I am offering for improvement suggestions.
Katy I don't see anything wrong, you have a beautiful, well structured autumn plant and fabulious texture to juxtapose it. I think this is lovely and you're being far too hard on yourself!! @grammyn
I expect @monikozi will suggest shading or shadow?!
Beautiful colours Katy. Not sure if it would work but maybe darken the area in front of the plant so that it's different to the wall behind the plant. Hope my explanation isn't too vague. @grammyn
@grammyn - the texture of the background is great and that is way beyond my pay grade. i see nothing wrong and i'm rather delighted you found that photo inspiring enough to paint. thank you.
@randystreat That is what appealed to me the most about the photo I think kathy thanks @30pics4jackiesdiamond very generous supportJackie. I was disappointed in the clarity of the leaves and their shapes
leaves @salza I know shading is iportant to achieve depth and that is a great suggestion Sally thanks @wakelys That means a lot to me Sue thanks @summerfield it was a fabulous photo and I feel l left a lot lacking in recreating it thanks Vikki
@grammyn Katy, I simply love the texture of the concrete you achieved here. Really amazing. And I think you stuck well to the photo. But, surprisingly enough, in drawing, you can only achieve depth by using shadows, even if there are none. I would first suggest some shadow along the line where the two planes meet (where the little colourful branch emerges). Just a hint of a shadow along the line, and my guess would be to make it more obvious on the vertical plane (the one behind the plant). And if you wish, you may also add the faintest of shadows of the plant itself behind it (on the same vertical plane). Not sure if this is all English or if it would work. But that would be what I would try.
It's nice to see some activity in the gang. I really like the texture of the stone (i know i said it before) and i also like how you reproduced the colours of autumn. Really amazing.
@monikozi your thoughtful suggestion perfectly describes what is wrong with this painting. I knew I didn’t like it but I didn’t know why and you have given me that answer. Definitely something for me to keep in mind for the future. Thank you so much Monika for the praise and the recommendation
