Demolition Days 2

So the other day I posted a shot of an old building that is being torn down. Unfortunately there are a couple of more coming down as well.
This is the Kelly Building that was built to house the James Ramsey Dept. Store back in 1915. This was one of Edmonton's first department stores. Over the years it was home to many retail outlets and restaurants and offices. A couple of years ago the building was vacated so the new developer could go ahead with his plans to build a new office tower.
The reason for the scaffolding is that the bricks from the façade will be taken down and reused once the new building is built.
So I guess that once again progress rears its ugly head and another long standing landmark building will be no more
Cool shot

But that's the way of the world - everywhere. I suppose it has always happened, pleased they are saving and reusing the bricks.

It almost looks like it's going up. Nice shot.

I like the idea that the bricks are at least being reused. I wonder where and how. Nice photo to record the process.

Great capture. It is sad to see old buildings coming down. While my husband and I were out tonight we noticed a couple of buildings had been torn down that were standing the last time we passed by that area. Sad.

Oh that is sooo sad! Looks very early in the morning here? Great capture!

Ruddy old office towers - who wants them besides a developer! Glad they are using the bricks!

Interesting dilemma between keeping the old and replacing it with new. Some of these old buildings have reached their 'use by' date in terms of economic efficiency, but we should preserve what has historic or cultural significance. Thankfully not my call.

Oh what a shame, it's all about progress nowadays.

NIce capture and info.

A forlorn capture - but I wonder where those slicks will go next?
July 31st, 2013
do they ever refurb in that area?

So sad to see such a historic building go down! I'm glad to hear the bricks will be reused though.

It's sad to see this coming down.

Its great that you are recording these events. I'm glad some of the bricks are being used in the new building. I wonder of the new one will last as long as this one. Katharine

It looks like a very attractive looking building, I suppose today's developers need to have their chance, it just a shame all the same
July 31st, 2013
So glad you captured this before it is changed! Great that you know and share so much history!

Love pics of buildings and their stories!! Lovely capture
July 31st, 2013
cool shot, but I hate to see those buildings going down, why leaf the fasade and build new behind it.
July 31st, 2013
Great shot. Its always sad to see that progress seems to be equal to destroying existing things. Its all about money I suppose its much cheaper to pull down old buildings and start new ones, maybe there is some tax subsities doing it this way as well

The part of the city I was born only exist on photographs. An 8 lines highway
it is now . So it can be worse. You still get a building back.
But sometimes the construction is so bad (rusty irons in the concrete) that rebuilt is the best solution.
July 31st, 2013
Well, at least they will rescue the bricks but you'd think with all the advancements in technology and architecture they could have figured out a way to build the new around the old. I guess 1915 is not old enough!
July 31st, 2013
So are they going to build something different with the bricks then? Curious.

August 1st, 2013
@tonydebont I do understand the need for new buildings but in this case it is an office tower and we currently have a number of them with a lot of vacant space so I am not sure that we need another one at the moment
August 1st, 2013
@http365proj However this is not progress in my mind

@fishers That is a very interesting thought
August 1st, 2013
@claireuk Yes they do need a chance but I wish they would build on a vacant lot instead of tearing something like this down
August 1st, 2013
@kathyladley Glad to share it
August 1st, 2013
@joeyc Thanks Joey Glad you enjoyed this one
August 1st, 2013

@khirsch I really do not understand this especially in light of the fact that we have a number of office buildings with vacant space in them at the moment
August 1st, 2013
@pyrrhula Yes we are getting a new building but I just do not agree with this one having to come down
August 1st, 2013
@olivetreeann Well my thought was that they could have chosen some vacant lots which we do have a number of at the moment
August 1st, 2013
@archaeofrog They are going to put them back up around the base of the new tower so I am not sure how that is going to look
August 1st, 2013
The lighting is beautiful, the composition is excellent! Great capture!
August 1st, 2013
i'm surprised the government let them do that to the building, but at least the bricks are being re-used, one small consolation perhaps. nice shot, brian.
August 1st, 2013
Such a shame, but at least the bricks will be re-used. That is good to hear.
August 2nd, 2013
@summerfield I was very surprised as well. Somehow the developer convinced the city to remove its historical status
August 2nd, 2013
@sunraye Thanks Raye
August 2nd, 2013
