A part of the heart of downtown Edmonton has been drastically altered. The Kelly Building which once was home to the Ramsey Department Store is no longer standing. This building along with two other historical buildings have been torn down to make room for a new office tower.
The photo on the left shows the building in better days. The middle shot shows part of the demolition that took place. Before they totally brought the building down they did preserve some of the bricks to be used in part of the design of the new building. The far right is a shot I took showing the construction that is now taking place where this once magnificent building once stood. Yes the cityscape of Edmonton is most definitely changing
Wow. Great comparison shots. It's always sad to see a building torn down to be replaced with something modern. They should restore the old buildings to leave part of the history in the city. Nice triptych.
Nice that they are preserving some of the bricks to reuse. I have seen in some places where they gut the old building and keep the old facade then build a completely new building inside the old walls. The first few floors look like the old building and then a modern sky scraper grows out of it.
I think I remember a post you did sometime ago on this old building. Well, the new building is rather nice and will be modern and efficient. Probably some older buildings allowed to remain somewhere else in the city!
It's true that you cannot stop change but a great pity to see buildings that made history for a particular place like this raised to the ground. great triptych. Thanks for sharing
Great series, but sad loss of the beautiful building. The new one doesn't seem to have much character. They are renovating a lot of buildings here, but they're getting good at keeping the facades and developing the insides.
Nice story in these photos, Brian, but sad too. I hate to see these old and the historic buildings ripped apart for another high rise.... Progress isn't always "progress".
@maggiemae The new building is not built yet. The far right shot is the area where the construction is taking place. The first two photos were ones that I posted earlier in my project
Wow progress is sometimes heartfelt. Too bad they couldn't have restored the old building it had character and would have been a wonderful contrast of new and old in the city.
It's good to have this record. Personally I am sad when i see nice old buildings being torn down to make way for new ones which I usually don't find nearly as attractive. There's something so cold about so much modern architecture.
The place/street/house I`ve been born is now an eight line traffic highway road.
