Size Says It All

This particular grave I found quite interesting. The man buried here is William Magrath. Actually the grave is marked by the small stone behind the large one. The large one simply has his name on it.
William Magrath was a real estate agent and land developer
Him and his partner are credited with building the neighbourhood of Highlands in North East Edmonton. They personally financed the building of many of the homes which are still standing today including the Magrath Mansion and Holgate Mansion.
Sadly Magrath passed away in 1920 in his early 50's. Unfortunately because the real estate market took a down turn during the First Workd War Magrath left behind a large debt to his wife including unpaid taxes in his home which the city ended up taking possession of.
He did however manage to leave a name for himself in a rather large fashion
Anita said you are quite an historian, so the information is always fascinating! This is a lovely (if very large) piece of stone work!

The irony of a large monument when his family would have been better served by something less ostentatious. As it says in Matthew, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Interesting story, My wife and I always visit the graveyards of the places we vacation! There is just something about them!!
September 10th, 2015
It is sad to think that one can place some idea of a legacy on a large piece of stone with a name- and then leave the wife and children destitute! I'm sure none of them really thought that would happen and I'm sure he never meant to do that to his family. So sad!

That is an interesting story and grave. I've never seen one with two markers like that before. I wonder why they couldn't have put all the information on that huge one with just the name on it. Maybe it was put there later?

I like the tombstone although it is a bit ostentatious. I wonder why the stone says "Magrath" and not "McGrath"? Thanks for sharing this interesting info, Brian.
