Then and Now....Last Building Standing

Today's post shows building fronts on Jasper Avenue. The top picture 1913. Bottom picture l took today.
Of the buildings from the top only the Union Bank Building is still standing. Today it is a hotel.
The building in the top picture that is so unique is the Agency Building. That is the tall narrow building.
The cost of buildings back then were determined in part by the size of the plots frontage on Jasper Avenue.
As a result the Agency building was built only 25 feet wide. It was 150 feet deep.
There was 1 corridor on the right side of each floor. There was a fire escape on each floor but it was through the window in each back office
The Agency Building was torn down in 1972 to make room for a theater and a 20 story office tower
Interesting photos

A remarkable transformation - with the old survivor being the most attractive building in the now shot.

wow! what a transformation!

It sounds a bit like our window tax from many, many years ago, when each window was taxed. People began to brick them up to save money. I like that they've transformed the bank building.

A great comparison.

Nice to see at least one building was saved from the wrecking ball. Your POV dwarfs it next to the newer buildings...which I'm sure it is.
May 5th, 2021
I'm glad the one building was saved. Too bad the other one couldn't be restored--both have/had a lot of character.

Great shots of the past and the new situation.
May 5th, 2021

May 6th, 2021
It's too bad that narrow building wasn't preserved as well, but the bank has found a new life for itself. Another good then and now collage!
