We visited the Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp near Nordhausen in eastern Germany. Such a tragic tale of wasted lives and needless deaths. This is the muster station where the prisoners would gather each day for a roll call regardless of the weather or how exhausted they were. There is a poignant memorial behind and the whole site has been very sensitively treated.
It looks like such an innocent image. It's hard to even begin to comprehend the horrors that took place on that patch of land. I was thinking about all of that yesterday with the death of Simone Veil, an Auschwitz survivor. So senseless and sad.
I can only imagine the horrors that went on here, but now it does have a peaceful look although I would find it very hard to visit as these sort of places seem to hold an atmosphere for me.
