15th May 2017

Today it was bright sun again and we have a kist of places to see during our last day. Yet again we were mostly walking and walked at over half of the National Mall, first down to Lincoln’s memorial and then through the parks to the Washington Memorial which typically is closed to visitors as they refurb the lifts so we could not get the aerial views I was hoping for. Although this is not a tourist pic, I really like this one of the girls attempting to get a ‘selfie’ with all of the Washington monument in it by lying on their backs looking up!

On to Union Station where we will be traveling to New York tomorrow and the building is amazing, putting Waterloo somewhat to shame and there was a food court in the basement as well. We were really close to Capitol building here and so decided to walk down for a closer look. Nearly all of the roads were closed due to the ceremony for the American police and also we discovered later on for Donald Trump to address the audience - apparently he messed up again by being insensitive to children who had lost their fathers in the line of duty... how much more can that man do and get away with it?

We were not sure how close we would be able to get to Capitol Hill but in the event we managed to get right up to the front of the building despite other people being warned off by the security police. I am not sure if I looked like Press or if Colin looked like he was one of the officers but either way we were able to get some great pics of the front.

Finally we walked back to Union Station across the park for our final destination of the day - Ben’s Chili Bowl. Colin has been determined t get here as apparently it is one of President Obama’s favorite place sand there is a photo of him on the wall. We made it and there was plenty of seating in the booths. I had a small chili bowl with fries and a huge strawberry milkshake (that’s the diet out of the window today then!) and Colin had what the President ordered - a half ? smokey with fries. It really was delicious and we sat next to the photo of the President. Colin ‘went large’ and ordered a small bowl of chili and coleslaw afterwards as will - piglet! We had now runout of steam totally so headed back to our lovely hotel room, a brief pause on route as a group of around 6 Secret Service men loitering outside of the Lincoln Theatre next door to Ben’s Chili Bowl. We were hoping that The Trump or Obama could turn up but we gave up waiting and went home instead, we’ve got a long day of travel tomorrow!
