23rd September 2017

All of a sudden it’s our last day in Fremantle. We decided to have a good explore today as slightly less jet lagged than we were on Wednesday. After checking up with the car hire company for tomorrow we headed for the harbor and the shipwreck museum. The museum was fascinating, not only great exhibits but really well thought through layout and information. We thought the weather had taken a turn for the better but whilst we were inside the museum the rain started hammering down for quite some time.

After our bout of culture we headed to Vicki and Bill’s gallery, They own our Coach House and are a lovely couple. Their gallery is quite unique in that is specialises in Aboriginal art by top desert artists and rather than the usual gallery practice of accepting pieces of work and then taking a high percentage of the sale price once sold, all the work is bought directly by the gallery from the artists so that they receive a fair price and the money straight away and the work is then sold from the gallery and in other galleries across the globe.

We enjoyed a coffee and a chat (double mach filled to the top) and then headed down to Fremantle Markets and enjoyed an eclectic lunch of large sushi rolls, chicken satay, fried potato with aioli and on Bill’s recommendation we managed to cram down a crepe with lemon and cinnamon sugar. I’m hoping it is NOT possible to put back on the 2-stone I have worked so hard to lose over the past 6 months! One of the high points was hearing Darren, a didgeridoo maker and player playing and agreeing to sit Gulliver on his knee whilst doing so.

Afterwards we walked a long walk down to South beach. It was quite chilly but it was great to get the sea air. We found lots of ‘blue bottles’ - little blue jellyfish washed up on the beach. They can sting you even when dead so I could not poke them too much. Alongside them were lots of lovely violet snail shells but they still ‘had occupants’ as they had their little bubble floats attached that enable them to be blown quickly across the sea to find their food which happens to be the blue bottles! This is one of the violet snail shells which really are pretty.

We move on tomorrow Northwards with car to Cervantes and the Pinnacles area. I am really hoping that the weather will pick up as we want to try some astrophotography. We will be sorry to leave our home from home Coach House in Fremantle though.
