1 year, 26 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020.
I had been looking forward to today for a while as we planned to travel uptown for the first time in about 7 months and attempt a bit of Mud-larking. I had planned the area and route to get there and it was an easy journey up there. We walked from Waterloo station to Blackfriars bridge and found steps down onto the beach. We had timed our visit to be 2 hours before low tide so would have at least 4 hours to search the shore.
It was very interesting and I found animal teeth, shards (correct name sherds) of china, short lengths of pipes, some glass and 16th century nails. There were large areas of old glass bottles, burnt wood and many animal bones. Sadly no gold brooches this time and no complete pipe bowls. I’ve got the bug and so will be up again in the near future with a more focussed plan of areas to search.
We had bought sandwiches from M&S and Colin had bought water and soap as I know we have to be very careful to avoid picking up bacterial bugs or Weil’s disease from the dirty mud.
It was a beautiful day so we continued walking on the South Bank and in the event we walked to Southwark, Shad Thames and all the way to Rotherhithe. We stopped for a coffee and biscuit outside and again (only as Colin’s back was hurting!) at the old pub there Mayflower before we caught the train back to Clapham Junction. It was getting busy on the train but everyone had face masks on and we did our best to keep spaced out.
It was a really nice day and spa lovely to visit London again - although it was incredibly quite compared to usual times with tourists, to be honest, I rather liked it as we were able to walk along.
