18th September 2021

1 year, 174 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

We had hoped for a good sleep and a lie in but that was not to be as a group of students decided to sing and shout for half an hour outside our apartment at 4.00am. We were pretty tired despite a lie in.

After breakfast we walked into and around Evora stopping at the fairly intact Roman temple in the centre of the city near the cathedral where we had a great coffee. We managed to find parts of the old aqueduct in the city and traced part of its route along the streets. Later we found a restaurant just off of Praça do Giraldo for lunch and a beer.

In the afternoon we started to walk towards our apartment but stopped to visit the Capela dos Ossos - a small interior chapel located next to the entrance of the Church of St. Francis. We had to queue for ten minutes or so but it was fascinating when we finally managed to get in and we also climbed the stairs to the roof of the church to get some great views across the city (although to be honest the views from the terrace in our apartment are pretty good as well). On our way out we discovered that there was not just one but two weddings taking place which is funny as we always seem to see a complete strangers wedding whenever we are away abroad. I have to say that the guests were far better dressed than they are at celebrations at home!

We had booked an outside table at the same restaurant that we had dined at last night but sadly it was nowhere near as good this evening. The guy who looked after us last night was on his day off and it appeared that the staff on that night had no skills at managing the orders. We were ignored for ages and when we finally placed an order it took just a few minutes shy of an hour to arrive... tepid. Needless to say we did not leave a tip and after all that time sat outside we were really cold as well. Our apartment felt lovely and warm and Colin made espresso coffees to warm us up!
