Lucy and I had an interesting walk around the city walls yesterday. We hoped to find a display of daffodils along the banks, but it's still a bit early for a good display.
A beautiful spring-like day had brought out many others to enjoy the walls walk, as you can see here, where the view is past the rear of Micklegate Bar, just visible on the right, and south-east along the walls beyond.
In Victorian times there were grand plans to demolish the walls and create wide roads along the route, but fortunately some forward thinking individuals campaigned to save them, and the walkways were eventually widened and opened to the public. Now, the walls are a highlight of many visitors time in York
Whenever the weather turns nicer it brings out the people as we see here in your picture.thanks tothe foresight of some people as you say these walkways are now a tourist attraction.
Thank you Padlock - the Victorians did put a few extra holes in the walls to improve access, and removed barbicans from most of the gates, but luckily much has survived.
Thank you Bruni - it's still school Easter holidays here so there are a lot of visitors here at the moment, and a warmer day made the walls a pleasant place to walk.
Thank you Hazel - it's a fascinating place to explore. I did a whole series of shots of it in my solo project last summer (starting around http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-30)
Such a lovely place to go for a walk! Been there, done that and enjoyed every minute spent in York. A couple of years ago Dewi and Gareth my husband and youngest son) were playing with the Beaumaris Band in York Minster. It was an unbelievable experience to be in the audience, I can't imagine what it was like for the players. Gareth and one of the girls from the band also did some Welsh clog dancing during one of the pieces, which acted as a kind of percussion. (They weren't playing their instruments as they were dancing!)
Thank you Ann - It's fascinating to walk around the walls at different parts of the year, especially when it's fairly quiet. It gets very busy at Easter and in summer though.
The minster is a fascinating space. Concerts in there are wonderful - I went to a Beethoven concert in there a few years ago and the sound was wonderful
