Bowland Tower by fishers

Bowland Tower

This is the flagship statement of Lancaster University. Some call it a blight on the landscape as its 14 storeys are visible for miles, but it is quite an integrated part of the uni (if they knocked it down, half the shops would go with it!)

Bowland Tower was built as part of Bowland College in 1968, and it was originally intended to hide the university heating system's exhaust pipe. It used to be student accommodation but it's been closed since 2008 following extensive accommodation building elsewhere on campus and concerns over its safety (sadly, quite a few students decided to jump off the top of it, leading to Lancaster having the reputation for the highest suicide rate of any university). There has been talks recently about them refurbishing the accommodation in there at an estimated cost of £2.5 million. - Lucy
All universities seem to have one of these monstrosities somewhere! Even we in Cambridge haven't escaped!

Good capture, but I think that I would be the camp of A blot on the landscape.

It is a bit of a blot on the landscape but good capture of the spirit of it

Good capture bur typical of bad 1960s buildings

Not a great building, but a good shot of it. Looks a pretty grim day!

Loughborough has a more hideous tower! There's an argument in Shrewsbury at the moment about keeping some 1960's building for future generations to marvel at. :)

A lot of people live in tower houses like this in Holland. Great capture of the architecture

Lots of universities in the US have a tower, or two, mostly for student living. Nice commentary about this building history.

It seems a bit OTT to build that tower to hide a pipe!!

@katharinehubbard It's true, they all like to put their mark on a town! - Lucy

@thresheg You can see it from an awfully long way away, and the campus is in the middle of the countryside! I'm with you too! - Lucy

@purplehaze12 Thanks Hazel - you're right there, the 60s aren't respected for their architecture! - Lucy

@dolphin Thanks, yes it rained on and off all day but on the whole, the weather is warmer than it has been - Lucy

@malc I think they should keep the odd one as a 'how not to build a building' for future architects!!! - Lucy

@monkeykid Thank you - Lucy

@pyrrhula Really? That's interesting. I did notice when I lived abroad that flats are much more common in Europe than they are here. I tutored some girls who lived in a block with 14 floors, they had a lovely view! - Lucy

@bkbinthecity Thank you. I'll have to come back in a few years to have a look around if they re-open it, as it's all locked up! - Lucy
