This is the flagship statement of Lancaster University. Some call it a blight on the landscape as its 14 storeys are visible for miles, but it is quite an integrated part of the uni (if they knocked it down, half the shops would go with it!)
Bowland Tower was built as part of Bowland College in 1968, and it was originally intended to hide the university heating system's exhaust pipe. It used to be student accommodation but it's been closed since 2008 following extensive accommodation building elsewhere on campus and concerns over its safety (sadly, quite a few students decided to jump off the top of it, leading to Lancaster having the reputation for the highest suicide rate of any university). There has been talks recently about them refurbishing the accommodation in there at an estimated cost of £2.5 million. - Lucy
Loughborough has a more hideous tower! There's an argument in Shrewsbury at the moment about keeping some 1960's building for future generations to marvel at. :)
@pyrrhula Really? That's interesting. I did notice when I lived abroad that flats are much more common in Europe than they are here. I tutored some girls who lived in a block with 14 floors, they had a lovely view! - Lucy
