This attractive flower is on a shrub called Broom. It is relatively rare around York, but I found lots of specimens growing wild on a brief stay with my mum at the end of last week, following her latest eye treatment at the local hospital.
I went for a short walk one morning around areas that I knew well as a child, and which have changed enormously in the intervening years.
The later part of the walk took me along what is known as the racecourse, but which I believe were actually training gallops. Much of the track was bordered by broom, which seems to thrive on the dry sandy soils found there.
Many of the flowers were a vivid yellow, but I particularly liked a few of the bushes where the yellow also contained red highlights.
Beautiful colors, Ian. We have broom in our area (we call it "Scotch Broom." It was introduced and, unfortunately, become invasive. Certainly beautifully bright, though.
We have broom all about us in Wales but I have never taken the time to look closely at the flowers. That orange on the yellow is wonderful. Lovely close-up Ian and a lesson for me :-)
Thank you Graham - I'd never looked closely at one of these flowers before, and they are quite attractive!

Ian
Thank you Ross - it's the first time I've looked closely too. I was curious about the red flash, since most bushes had all yellow flowers.
