Bailrigg Mansion by fishers

Bailrigg Mansion

Perhaps not the most exciting photo, but this is where Lancaster Uni started from. It was owned by successive generations of the Storey family and Mr and Mrs Barton Townley. When Sir Thomas Storey bought the estate it came with 523 acres of land and his son built the mansion between 1899 and 1902. In 1921 the land was sold at auction, and the ordnance survey map shows the area as a small landed estate. In the 1960s, the owners were asked if they would sell the estate to allow for the construction of the university, and they were eventually persuaded to give it up for £50,000.

Today, the mansion holds the pharmacy and dentist for campus. In my final 2 weeks here, it's interesting to learn about the history of where I've been living. - Lucy
