Midland Hotel, Morecambe by fishers

Midland Hotel, Morecambe

Morecambe's Midland Hotel was built by the LMS Railway and opened in 1933. It replaced an earlier hotel of the same name on the same site. It's Art Deco style was a dramatic contrast to earlier buildings in Morecambe, and it sparked an outburst of Art Deco style buildings in the area.

Next to the hotel was a massive Art Deco swimming pool, and the frontages of the Woolworth and Littlewoods stores nearby were Art Deco in style. Many private houses built in the 1930s also had Art Deco features.

The Midland Hotel itself fell into disuse at the end of the 20th century, but it was bought by Urban Splash, and fully restored and extended between 2006 and 2008. Many original features were kept and restored, and it is once again an impressive building to see. It appears well used, judging by the number of cars in the car park.

As you can see, this shot towards the end of my visit to see Lucy was taken in glorious sunshine, the second half of my visit being in much better weather than the first half.

@monkeykid

Thank you Therese - it would have been nice to get a shot without the cars, but sadly that wasn't possible.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni - you're right, it must have been quite a contrast with the rather fussy architecture of earlier years.

@angelat

Thank you Angela - I love Art Deco too, and the area around this hotel must have been impressive with a number of Art Deco buildings. Sadly not all have survived, but this lovely hotel has been beautifully restored.
