This interesting looking construction can just be seen from the railway station in Sheffield, especially on a sunny day!
The four stainless steel drums were designed to be the National Centre for Popular Music. This was a museum for contemporary music and culture, a £15 million project largely funded with contributions from the National Lottery, which opened on 1 March 1999, and closed in June 2000. Hence the "Ooop's" of my title.
The buildings were then used for musical events, before becoming home to the student union of Sheffield Hallam University in 2003.
@dide I have to say I prefer a more traditional building. I suppose the architect was wanting to reflect Sheffield's role in making stainless steel. Katharine
@julzmaioro I'm not sure its a whistle, but it is part of an iconic design! The tops used to revolve in the wind but someone stopped that bit of fun!
It's a talking point for visitors. Katharine
@dolphin Thanks. There was the usual amount of controversy about it in the local press from its conception to its demise, a lot surrounding its cost. At least the building is being used. Katharine
Great shot of this very nice and interesting architecture and building,
Thank you for you visits , you so nice comments and the fav, I`m very pleased with it.
@bobhuegel I think it fits the image of Sheffield Hallam University as some of its specialism's revolve around graphic design, mechanical engineering and music. I believe the museum was good but didn't attract visitors. Katharine
@silverhorn It is interesting to see but I would like to go closer next time. We had to continue our journey to mum and dads to celebrate dads birthday. Katharine
@pyrrhula Thanks Ferry. Its going on my list of interesting buildings. There are several more I want to take pictures of in Sheffield but I mainly go to visit mum and dad. Katharine
