Sheffield's Ooops! by fishers

Sheffield's Ooops!

This interesting looking construction can just be seen from the railway station in Sheffield, especially on a sunny day!

The four stainless steel drums were designed to be the National Centre for Popular Music. This was a museum for contemporary music and culture, a £15 million project largely funded with contributions from the National Lottery, which opened on 1 March 1999, and closed in June 2000. Hence the "Ooop's" of my title.

The buildings were then used for musical events, before becoming home to the student union of Sheffield Hallam University in 2003.

A more detailed analysis of the centres failure, (and to an extent a critique of Sheffield), can be found at:

Great shot - modern architecture not a patch on the older buildings is it? Some veqy red faces for the planners I imagine!

Must be a bit of a blot on the landscape,. why is there a whistle sticking out the top.... nice capture..

Good shot, but what an extraordinary waste of money.

Interesting building! I agree that it appears quite pricey for this ultimate Student Union. Appears to have been a government expenditure!

@padlock I am glad they found a use for the buildings, the idea of the museum was good and supposed to attract people to the area. Katharine

@monkeykid There are four that look the same around an atrium. Its an unusual building and acoustically good. Katharine

@dide I have to say I prefer a more traditional building. I suppose the architect was wanting to reflect Sheffield's role in making stainless steel. Katharine

@julzmaioro I'm not sure its a whistle, but it is part of an iconic design! The tops used to revolve in the wind but someone stopped that bit of fun!
It's a talking point for visitors. Katharine

@dolphin Thanks. There was the usual amount of controversy about it in the local press from its conception to its demise, a lot surrounding its cost. At least the building is being used. Katharine

@gillg Thanks. It is another of our interests and we don't have to like a building to snap it. Some buildings grow on us! Katharine

@bobhuegel I think it fits the image of Sheffield Hallam University as some of its specialism's revolve around graphic design, mechanical engineering and music. I believe the museum was good but didn't attract visitors. Katharine

@naomi It does look odd and seeing more of them seems to multiply their peculiarities. Katharine
