I may be home from Paris, but I couldn't help a little look back at my visit
The Georges Pompidou Centre is one of a number of large scale controversial building projects in Paris created in the latter part of the 20th century. Its claim to fame is that many of its service facilities are placed on the outside of the building, rather than being concealed inside, covering the structure with a maze of pipework covering the walls.
Initially, all of the functional structural elements of the building were colour-coded: green pipes are plumbing, blue ducts are for climate control, electrical wires are encased in yellow, and circulation elements and devices for safety (e.g., fire extinguishers) are red.
This shot shows a small section of the east side of the building, and this close-up then creates a pattern of colour and lines which I rather liked (although I was not impressed by the complete building)
Fun shot, Ian. I love the colors -- It is an amazing structure. During a visit to Paris in the mid-70s, we came across the just-completed Pompidou Center without any warning. Although my husband was just out of architecture school, even he was surprised by it. Delightful (and even shocking) among the classic Parisian building. Thanks for posting, It was one of those times in life when I remember registering such surprise in response to a building :-)
Great shot of what/where The Georges Pompidou Centre is famous of.
Beautiful close up, great colors ans as always : a splendid explanation .
( It`s also been told that the maintain cost so much money they think about demolish)
As a heat & frost Insulator I would have loved to done the piping and duct work on this job just to show of my work. It would be neat to see the hole building.
Thank you Cathie - there are a number of striking buildings from that period, but the amusing thing is that almost all of them were by non French architects.
Thank you Ferry - it has been a very expensive building. It cost a lot of money to build, and a huge amount was spent on renovation around the millennium.
