Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire (2) by fishers

Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire (2)

This shot of Fountains Abbey shows the full length of the church, and the remains of many other buildings in the foreground.

The site of this abbey is in a secluded valley, and from the visitor centre on the bank behind the church, little of the remains can be seen - only the top of the tower.

By the time of the dissolution of the monasteries, in the 1530s, they had become very wealthy and great landowners. Fountains Abbey owned land right across Yorkshire, and as far away as Cumbria.

Thank you Richard - Henry VIII took vandalism to a whole new level! And this site really is special, although there are quite a few other spectacular abbey ruins here in Yorkshire.
