Close to the centre of York, just outside the city walls, along Lord Mayors Walk, lies this large attractive Victorian building. It was one of two centres for the training of teachers founded in the 1840s, this one for training men, and another nearby for training women.
By the early 1860s the woman's college was moved to Ripon, some 20 miles away (that's one way of preventing fraternisation!).
By the time I was a student at this campus, it was St Johns College, still specialising in training teachers, but now both men and women were students here.
A few years later this college merged with the college at Ripon, and eventually all students were based at this campus at York.
Changes to higher education meant that St John's became a University, with a broader range of courses, including the training of nurses.
These buildings are part of the original campus, and recent pruning of the trees and shrubs along Lord Mayors Walk have made it much more visible, and much easier to photograph!
Thank you all for your encouraging comments, it was good to hear from so many of you. My own memories of this place are quite mixed, with some really good times there, and other times that were really hard, but all of which contributed to making me the person that I am.
