Katharine and I took further advantage of the recent Northern Rail propotion with local newspapers and took a trip to Appleby-in-Westmorland, on the famous Settle and Carlisle railway route. The choice of Appleby was partly due to the closure of the route north of there following a massive landslip. The area has suffered huge problems recently, with the effects of flooding at the end of last year still obvious in some parts of the town. We did find it a very friendly place, and had a chat with a number of local people.
This shot isn't Appleby itself, but was taken from the train to the south of Appleby on our way home, and looks across the Eden Valley towards Mallerstang Edge.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are very much appreciated. We thoroughtly enjoyed our visit to Applebly, but it was also lovely to see the snow on the hills - I could feel them calling me to go walking in the snow!
