Just to the south of Bishopthorpe palace is the site of the old St Andrew's Church. Only this west wall remainse, following the construction of a new church.
The first stone church was built on this site around the year 1205, and this lasted until 1768, when the second church was built on the same site.
Following a severe flood in 1892, when many graves in the churchyard were washed away, a new graveyard was created west of the palace, and in 1899 a new church was also built on that site.
This church was demolished, but this wall was left as a memorial to the old church. Today it is in a secluded corner, close to the river, and it catches the sunlight through gaps between the trees which surround it.
Thank you all for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
I've been looking for an image of this church before it was demolished, but with no success so far. It must have been very atteactive, both in the detail of the building and in it's riverside location.
