There is evidence that horse racing has taken place in and around York as early as Roman times, and possibly even earlier.
Racing on this course is believed to have begun in 1732, because of flooding problems on the earler course on Clifton Ings (although I have photos of much of this course covered by floodwater too!).
In recent years much has been done to improve the course and the facilities for people visiting the races. In 2005 this course was used to host the Royal Ascot meeting while the Ascot course was closed for a major redevelopment scheme.
At the moment the course is quiet, except for cyclists using a cycle route to join the disused railway shown a few days ago, and dog walkers exercising their pets.
This will change in around 6 weeks when the first race of this years flat race season in York will take place, and the noisy colourful spectacle of racing will be with us again.

The viewpoint I used for this shot is a bridge over a dual carriageway road which takes traffic past York away from the city centre. Just to the left of this view is a picnic area next to the track - an ideal place to wait to take photos of the races as the horses sweep around a long bend.
