This lovely sundial is in a modern walled garden in Clifton Park, Rotherham.
The stone grade II listed sundial was commissioned and made by Samuel Walker in 1739. In the 1970's it was moved from its previous home at Ferham House, Rotherham, and placed in the sunken garden behind the Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham. It stood there until it was laid flat after being damaged by vandals.
The sundial, complete with brass gnomon, was fully restored thanks to the generosity of 19 different companies who had worked as sub-contractors for UCS Civils Ltd.- the company which has spent 2010 working on the park's massive £7.5 million renovation programme. It was installed in the new walled garden and formally handed over to the 'Friends of Clifton Park'.
It was nice to get a brief visit into the centre of Rotherham and to see Clifton Park for the first time for a long time, while staying with my mum last week.
Beautiful sundial even though I do not understand what is written there. Loved reading the history of it and am glad it has been restored to its former glory.
Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The writing on the sundial is a latin moto "dum spectas fugio" which is a very common sundial inscription and translates as "While you watch, I flee". I should also add that the time on the sundial appears to be incorrect. The sundial shows just after 2pm (Grenwich Mean time - 3pm British Summer Time) but the photo was taken at around 3pm GMT (4pm BST).
