To bring this mini tour of Beverley to an end, I couldn't really finish without a look at Beverly Minster. Situated at the southern end of the town centre, this tall and imposing building had it's origins with a local monastery around 700AD. The construction of the current building began around 1214, and it took around 200 years to complete. It was built in the gothic architectural style, and is constructed of limestone.
That's a good question Ferry - I suppose that people were more religious in the middle ages and could therefore be more easily persuaded to part with their money. Also, some of the rich landowners and gentry would pay for their own chapels within a building like this so that they wouldn't be forgotten when they died.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, it's interesting to hear from you all.
This building might be impressive in it's scale, but I still preferred looking round St Mary's church.
