Burnby Hall Gardens are a lovely oasis of peace and beauty, only a few hundred yards from the centre of the town, and this shot shows the smaller of two lakes and some of the lovely lakeside vegetation.
Burnby Hall was the home of Major Percy Marlborough Stewart (1871-1962), an explorer, collector and big game hunter, and his wife Katherine. He and his wife bought Burnby Hall (then called Ivy Hall) in 1904 and subsequently developed an extensive estate of lands in and around Pocklington, Burnby and Hayton. From this time on the Major devoted his life to creating gardens of outstanding beauty at Burnby Hall; interspersed with eight world tours between 1906 and 1922, when, often accompanied by his wife, he travelled the globe and visited every continent.
His gardens survive and consist of several distinct areas, including a Victorian garden, a rockery, and a secret garden, amongst others. The lakes are well known for their varieties of water lilies - one of the largest collections in Europe.
The house itself is now used as offices for the local council.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are appreciated!
The gardens were a lovely place to explore, and it's a place I would love to visit again fairly soon - a beautiful place to relax and great photo opportunities!
Tony, Pocklington is about 12 miles east of York and there is a bus every 30 minutes. (Sadly it's railway was closed around 50 years ago)
