The National Railway Museum in York has it's own workshops to repair and maintain it's locomotives. In this shot, their working replica of Stephenson's 'Rocket' has had it's boiler removed and sent away for overhaul.
This replica is one of nine that have been built since 1923. It was completed in 1979, and took part in the 150th anniversary of the Rainhill Trials and the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.
It is sometimes used on the South Yard shuttle service (see yesterday's shot), but has also travelled to many locations around the UK. Perhaps one of the most unusual locations was in Hyde Park in London, near the Albert Memorial, where a temporary track was laid.
The original 'Rocket' resides in the Science Museum in London.
Super shot and story. When David and I first got married he said he would make me a model of Stephenson's Rocket as he is very much a steam engine man. Well 47 years later and I am still waiting. too many other projects over the years I believe.
Thank you all for your comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.
It would be interesting to know where the other replica versions of the Rocket are now. I do know that the National Railway Museum has another one that is sectioned to show the interior of the boiler.

Perhaps David has one of the other replicas hidden away somewhere and he is just polishing it ready for you!

Sorry to hear that Recuva didn't work for you - but perhaps you could use the lost photos as an excuse for another trip to Switzerland!
