Brooksbank House, Bradford by fishers

Brooksbank House, Bradford

When my grandson felt well enough to go back to school, I dropped him off there and then went for a walk around the Great Horton district of Bradford.

One of the most impressive houses in the district is Brooksbank House. Concealed behind a high wall, and until recently with a very overgrown garden, little was visible. Much of the garden has been cleared and the building can be seen more clearly than for a long time.

The development of Great Horton was stimulated by the construction of the Bradford to Halifax turnpike road, opened in 1740, and there are a number of properties constructed soon after that. Brooksbank House was built in 1746 for Gilbert Brooksbank, a member of one of the most important property owning families in the township during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Brooksbank House is now divided into two dwellings, and some of the other buildings constructed to service this big house have been converted into houses as well.

I love the brightness of the green door and cream stone frame and lintel. It really stands out among the darker stonework. Interesting history too.

Great capture of the architectural details especially the windows, stonework and roofline...amazing that these structures withstand the elements and remain standing...great history

We are regular visitors to Baildon - we must make the effort and explore the Big City! Nice shot.

Looks very majestic. Glad to see it well kept after all these years and it doesn't show that it has been converted into two houses. Thank you for sharing the info.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, it is nice to hear from you.

This is just one of a number of interesting and attractive buildings in the Great Horton area. On the Bradford Council website there is a Great Horton conservation area assessment pdf that can be downloaded which illustrates a wide collection of interesting buildings in the area, along with extensive notes about the area. Many councils have such documents available about their conservation areas, and I find them an invaluable source of information.

@shepherdman

I've found Bradford a fascinating area to explore since my daughter moved there - I can recommend spending time exploring. Amongst the city centre gems is it's cathedral, close to the new Broadway shopping centre.
