Around thirty years ago a new type of electric locomotive was built for use on services between London, Yorkshire and Scotland. They have been used for that purpose since then, but now new trains are coming into service and these class 91 locomotives will either need new employment or will be off to a scrapyard.
This shot was taken the day after it's last runs for East Coast, and it had moved earlier in the day from it's depot to Doncaster where there are railway workshops, so perhaps it will be overhauled for work elsewhere in the country.
Sorry about the mast for the overhead wires - they are a bit of a problem when taking photos of electric trains.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I must have ridden many thousands of miles on trains pulled by these locomotives over the last 30 years, and been to many interesting places. It will be interesting to see what adventures the replacement trains take me on!
Peter, the first 10 class 91s were built in 1988, with a further 21 built in 1990 and early 1991. Their current livery dates from 2015 and the Virgin franchise, but with the Virgin branding replaced by LNER branding in 2018. Several open access operators are interested in them, including a proposal to use a small group of them on a Blackpool to London Euston service.
@peadar Peter, the organisation behind the Blackpool to Euston service is Grand Central who already operate two quite successful open access routes, from Bradford and Hartlepool to London, so they are experienced operators. Launch is planned for Spring 2020.
wonderful shot and story. I bet you have used them a lot to visit your dear mother, whom I hope is doing better every day.
Have the new trains arrived yet?
@ninaganci Thank you Nina, mum is now back home from hospital. My brother is with her for a few days. The official launch of the new trains through York was today and features in today's photo.
