Battlefield Cross

Today is an important memorial day, being Remembrance Day which is an annual commemoration taking place on the anniversary of Armistice Day at the end of World War 1.

Our trip to Thirsk was to see how the Yarnbombers would mark the event this year, and once again they have produced an impressive Remembrance display.

My eye was particularly caught by this 'Battlefield Cross', where the death of a soldier killed on the battlefield is marked. Normally the rifle would be the opposite way up to the way it is shown here, but a bit of artistic license was used here to make the structure more stable. Sometimes the rifle is placed in the boots of the soldier. I was surprised to discover that this tradition actually goes back to World War 1. Primarily a USA tradition, I find it a very poignant symbol of loss.

Although I liked the symbol, I was far less happy with the background, so I had a play with the smudge tool in GIMP to fade it.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

The work of the Thirsk yarnbombers is very impressive. Their efforts in 2018 included a waterfall of poppies from the roof of the local church, and they have marked remembrance each year since. They also usually produce a summer display on a specific theme. Last summer was 'Endangered Species', and they have previously looked at the 'Tour De Yorkshire' and 'Summer Holidays', amongst others.
