Thirsk Market Place, and the largest element of the Thirsk yarnbombers Remembrance display is the decoration of the clock tower.
Although the poppies are predominantly red, there are a few purple ones amongst them as a reminder of the many animals that died during wars. The purple poppy was introduced in 2006 by the charity Animal Aid. Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were often drafted into the war effort, and those that wear the purple poppy feel their service should be remembered as well as the sacrifice of so many military personnel.
In particular, many horses were killed or injured in World War One, a time when there were still a lot of cavalry regiments in existence.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I will be back later to look and comment on all your photos, but meanwhile Katharine and I have a trip out to the vaccination centre at Askham Bar in York for our Covid-19 booster jab. I look forward to seeing your photos when we get back.
UPDATE Back from having our Covid-19 booster jabs, much earlier than expected. Bus connections worked so well getting there that we were 30 mins early, but they let us in early - they were waiting for customers.
