Tiles

As we left St Olave's Church, Katharine and I noticed this attractive display of tiles above an upstairs window of the building on the opposite side of the road to the church entrance.

The building is the Jorvik House Hotel, and it consists of several neighbouring buildings now under common ownership and linked together internally. All the external brickwork has been painted to make the hotel look more unifed.

This arch of tiles is above an upstairs window. It is likely that they are terracotta, and would have been a distinctive red / brown feature before they were painted. Today it needs the sun at the right angle to bring out the detail.

There are several buildings in this area with tile details, suggesting a more affluent area than many other areas with rows of undecorated terraced houses.
