Taken yesterday afternoon, with a simular pov to the photo posted yesterday, this locomotive is Duchess of Sutherland on a charter train from Tyseley (south Birmingham) to Newcastle. The train had left Tyseley pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive to sidings south of York station, where the diesel was moved to the back of the train (to provide hotel power for the coaches) and Duchess of Sutherland added to the head of the train.
Duchess of Sutherland pulled the train into York station, where there was a three minute pause before it's run north. It made a brisk and quite dramatic start with lots of steam and smoke, and a little wheelslip which was quickly brought under control.
The rapid start was to ensure that the train cleared the double track section of route out of York and was able to turn off onto the slow line to the north of York before it caused any delay to an Edinburgh express that followed it from York six minutes after the departure of the Duchess of Sutherland.
Will you please STOP taking great engine shots like this. I'm dead jealous! Another Fav. Like Old Henri Cartier B. - you took this at the decisive moment.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I was a little bit lucky with this one. As a steam locomotive pulls away from a stop the cylinder drain cocks are open to blast through any water in the cylinder, to prevent damage when normal operation begins. Moments before this the locomotive couldn't be seen due to steam. There is a brief pause when the drain cocks are closed when the steam clears enough for a shot, before normal exhaust can again at least partly shroud the locomotive in steam.

Sorry Paul - but I think the industrial action might prevent me taking any main line steam shots for a while!

Thank you Vesna!
