St Nicholas Church, Guisborough by fishers

St Nicholas Church, Guisborough

A rather different Moorsbus trip for Katharine yesterday. I've been suffering lower back pain so didn't think it was a good idea to go on the bus for a full day out, so Katharine went for a trip to Guisborough, with a town trail leaflet that we had collected on an earlier visit.

Guisborough lies to the north of the North York Moors national park, and the hills form an attractive backdrop to the town. The Sunday Moorsbus from York is a through service to Guisborough, and is a very pleasant ride through Bilsdale, before it follows the northern edge of the Moors eastwards to Guisborough.

St Nicholas Church is in a small cobbled square close to the heart of the town. There is evidence of a church in Guisborough over 900 years ago, though no documentary or other evidence that it was on the site of this church. This church is located beside the ruins of a priory, another victim of the greed of King Henry VIII and his Dissolution of the monasteries.

Much of the present St Nicholas Church is believed to have been built around 1500AD, on the site of an earlier church of 1290AD. Much of the interior has been changed several times since then, the most recent major change being in 1903-1908 to a design by the architect Temple Moore.

The church has an attractive interior, with some nice stained glass. There is also an impressive and highly decorated memorial to the De Brus family in the church nave.

Well I have to Fav this photo, it’s our church! Nice photo and history. The priory grounds are nice to walk too with the old priory window, there is a walkway along the left side of the church(as you look at it) which takes you around to the end of the priory, it makes some nice photos when the light is right.

Beautiful capture and building. Reminds me more of a castle than a church. Great history and thank you for sharing.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated. Katharine was thrilled by your comments.

Thank you too for the good wishes. I've discovered that my back responds well to a little gentle exercise, so I'm going out for a walk each day. Hopefully by the weekend I will be fit enough for a Moorsbus trip!

Paul, I hadn't even noticed the soldiers, but Katharine had. They are rather attractive!

I haven't been down the path to the left of the church, but I had previously made a note of it as a place to explore. Thank you for confirming it as a good vantage point. I had hoped that the church might be open on the Heritage Open Days week in September so I could add to my collection of phootos of the interior, but at the moment it isn't on the events list. Katharine and I are hoping to make another Moorsbus trip to Guisborough before the service ends at the end of September, there is so much to see. Katharine did take some photos of the priory and grounds.

@pusspup

The Moorsbus is a summer only bus service on Saturdays and Sundays. Several buses from outside the National Park run to and through it, connecting with each other to maximise oportunities to visit different places. It's a great way to be able to do linear walks, from one bus route to another. It's a wonderful service, and there is the advantage of meeting other explorers on the bus and sharing ideas.
