I rather like the way that the bud of the rhododendron seems to spend quite a long period with hardly any changes, and then, suddenly, it bursts into life, producing not one flower, but a whole cluster.
I like this attractive pink bud, seen in the Homestead Park in York, as it begins to burst open.

As some of you have correctly observed, this is early, at least two weeks earlier than I would normally expect to see the flower cluster opening. Hopefully we won't see much frost or they might suffer damage.
